If you are in the area and like to hike and explore the outdoors, or simply go somewhere for a noontime picnic, the area has some lovely parks and scenic areas to check out! Ritchies Amenia Deli (less than 5 minutes from the inn) offers some terrific sandwiches and other deli items perfect for a picnic.
Even if just going for a day hike, it’s very important to bring along some essentials like Bug Spray and Sun Screen. Check out this handy guide from SectionHiker, “Day Hikers’ Ten Essentials Guide” on some additional suggested items to bring with you.
Macedonia Brook State Park (22 Minutes from the inn)
159 Macedonia Brook Road, Kent, NY
Macedonia Brook State Park covers 2,300-acres. Hike the Blue Trail (Macedonia Ridge Trail) across Cobble Mountain and other peaks for beautiful views of the Taconic and Catskill mountains. The Blue Trail is a 7 mile loop featuring a lake as well as many small streams and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible from April until September. Kent Iron Company’s iron works was built at the park in the late 1700s, and you can still see some of the old foundations and the old forge and stamping works right next to Macedonia Brook. Housatonic Meadows State Park (25 Minutes from the Inn)

Housatonic Meadows is the perfect setting to spend some time outdoors, right on the banks of the Housatonic River. The Meadows is less than 2 minutes away from Clarke Outdoors, where you may rent canoes and rafts for the day. The Meadows is the stopping point for boat rentals from Clark’s, who will bring you up to Falls Village to start, and you can coast (or paddle) down river. The 6 or 10 mile stretch is a mix of mixture of moving flatwater and easy whitewater and is suitable for novice paddlers. As you paddle downriver you will see and go under the famous Covered Bridge in West Cornwall. The 2 mile stretch of river right after the Meadows is also perfect for fly fishing and is limited to fishing only, no boats may enter that section of the river. There is no charge to use the park. Kent Falls and Kent Falls State Park (25 Minutes from the Inn)
462 Kent Cornwall Rd, Kent, CT
The Kent Falls Trail winds 1/4 mile up along and beside the scenic falls. The trail is not difficult to climb but it is quite steep, it does have many points along the trail to stop and rest and enjoy the beautiful views. The Falls itself is a is a series of waterfalls on a mountain stream known as Falls Brook. The stream begins in the town of Warren and flows west to the main fall where it plunges about 70 feet down into a series of lesser falls. The covered bridge at the entrance to the park is an authentic reproduction built in 1974 by a park employee. The park itself below the falls offers dozens of picnic tables including separate picnic areas bordering the tree line. There is no charge to use the park. Lake Waramaug State Park (35 Minutes from the Inn)
30 Lake Waramaug Rd, New Preston, CT
Lake Waramaug is one of the most scenic bodies of water in Connecticut. The park is perfect for a picnic, a day of boating or just coming to take a swim on a hot summer’s day. In the fall, the lake throngs with sightseers and photographers trying to catch the beautiful foliage reflected in the lake’s still water. Lake Waramaug’s name came from an Indian chief of the Wyantenock tribe. His tribe hunted near the fall of the Housatonic River, now referred to as “Lover’s Leap”, in the town of New Milford.
